Golf Senators finish in sixth: NJCAA tourney
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Walters State golf team fired a final round 291 Tuesday in the NJCAA Division I Fall Golf Preview Tournament at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Huntsville to finish in sixth place in the prestigious invitation only event.
The Senators ended the event with a two-day total of 588, which was 17 shots behind first place McLennan (Tx.) at 571. Host school Central Alabama took second place with a 578, while Odessa (Tx.) finished in third with a 582. Brevard (Fla.) and Western Texas rounded out the top five with a 585 and 587, respectively.
Sophomore Matthew Smith led Walters State for the two days with a 144 (73-71) to continue his hot start to the season. Freshman Player Pierce carded a 147 (74-73), and fellow first-year player Mark Hickey finished at 148 (73-75). Sophomore Wil Jarnagin rounded out the team score with a 149 (77-72). Freshman Tanner Garland carded a 159 (78-81) for an individual score.
The Senators will close out the fall portion of their schedule beginning on Oct. 19-20 in the Lincoln Memorial Invitational at Woodlake Golf Club in Tazewell.
