Mercy honors veterans at Nov 9 event
KNOXVILLE – - Mercy Health Partners and East Tennessee Personal Care
Service will sponsor a Veteran’s Day Celebration on Monday, November 9,
2009 at the O’Connor Senior Center, 611 Winona Street. The celebration will
begin at 9:30 a.m. with opening remarks by Bob Griffith, Chief of Staff for
Congressman John Duncan.
Festivities will also include branch of service and veteran acknowledgments
by retired four-star General Carl W. Stiner. General Stiner served as
Commander in Chief, US Special Operations Command. As Commander in Chief,
he was responsible for the readiness of all special operations forces of
the Army, Navy, and Air Force, both active duty and reserve, retiring in
May 1993.
The day will also include a Color Guard flag presentation, musical
tributes, USO refreshments, a service memorabilia exhibit and a video
presentation by Eddie Mannis, Chairman of HonorAir Knoxville from the April
2009 trip to Washington, DC.
As a special tribute, Challenger, an American Bald Eagle from The American
Eagle Foundation at Dollywood, will make an appearance.
Shirley Nash-Pitts, WVLT Volunteer TV News consumer expert, and Jeff
Jarnigan, B97.5 radio personality will be guest hosts.
Immediately following the celebration at O’Connor, the public is invited to
board motor coaches provided by Mayes Bus Line and take a short trip to
Knoxville’s new World War II memorial on the World’s Fair Site. The tour
and transportation are free, but pre-registration is required. A wreath
will be presented at the memorial.
