MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Freshman forward Fred Sturdivant recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Walters State Senators to an 87-75 victory over the Southwest Tennessee Saluqis Friday night at ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium.

The Senators put five players in double figures, outrebounded the Saluqis 61-41 and shot 48.4 percent (30 of 62) from the field to keep their unbeaten record intact. Walters State is now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in TCCAA league play, while the loss dropped Southwest to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

John Holleman added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Senators, Kyle Upton tacked on 11 points, and Trey Payne and Dominique Taylor each had 10 points in the win. Payne also dished out six assists, and Sturdivant blocked five of the 8 shots the Senators deflected in the contest.

Walters State overcame a horrid night at the charity stripe, making only 24 of 48 free throws and turning the ball over 18 times in the win. The Senators did it with defense, holding the Saluqis to only 36.3 percent (29 of 80) shooting in the loss.

Southwest was led by Deveyon Hunter with 19 points in the game, while Gerald Watkins added 13 points and Cortez Wilder ended with 11 in the defeat.

Walters State will be back on the hardwood Saturday afternoon hosting Dyersburg State in a TCCAA conference matchup. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
